EVERYDAY MOMENTS WITH GOD

Cold Toes & Fuzzy Slippers: Are We Missing God?

AN EVERYDAY MOMENT WITH GOD

Good morning, man. We got to talk about cold toes. Oh, they be cold.

Fuzzy slippers! That was my answer. I dug them out, put them on, and figured I was good now. They were cute. They were comfortable. Surely they would do the job. A little time passed. Them cold toes were still here.

Then I looked outside and saw the sun. I went out and exposed my toes to the sunshine. Warmth. Thank you, Lord. Just what I needed.

The slippers had seemed like a good idea. But in that moment, they weren’t what I needed.

That got me thinking about churches. We can know the words, follow the routines, listen to the sermons, and look like we belong. We can all be wearing the same slippers. And still have cold toes.

What happens when the outward signs of religion become the answer, while the need for God Himself goes unattended? I don’t want to mistake the appearance of warmth for warmth.

In 2 Chronicles 23, the people renew their covenant to be the Lord’s people. Verse 16 puts that commitment plainly. The chapter also describes the restoration of worship. The question it raises for me isn’t whether worship or gathering matters. It’s whether our practices serve our devotion to God—or stand in its place.

I want more than talk about God. I want to know Him. I want the life, the love, the warmth. That’s what the sunshine brought to mind.

The slippers didn’t warm my toes. The sunshine did.

And if your toes are cold, pay attention to your toes.

With so much love—and a basenji on the loose. ❤️
